Teaching Assistant in International Buddhist College, Sister Chiew Suan Bee sharing “Some highlights from the Diamond Sūtra ”
Some highlights from the Diamond Sūtra:
( Vajracchedikā Prajñāpāramitā Sūtra )
The Diamond sūtra is part of the text of the Prajñāpāramitā (Perfection of Wisdom) discourses.
The sūtra illustrate the concept of non-existence, that is phenomena exist but not permanently and ultimately empty.
The sūtra makes use of extensive paradox to teach about the transient nature of the world. Through these paradox it encourages critical thinking and self reflection.
The teachings had inspired and guided Hui-neng on his spiritual path.
All composed things are objects of the mind that are conditioned to arise, exist for a while and then disappear. Everything in life seems to follow this pattern and although things looks real, they are more like the things a magician conjures up. We can see and hear them clearly, but they are not really what they appear to be - Thich Nhat Hanh.
The passage teaches us how to contemplate our conditioned existence in this fleeting world.
Non attachment: The unattached practice of charity without attachment to outcomes. And even the teachings are just skillful means to guide beings towards enlightenment. Attachment cause sufferings because it clings to impermanent things as if they are permanent.
Emptiness: All things are interdependent without any real existence like the shadow, clouds, dewdrop and stars. Remembering emptiness, we do not hold on to anything as belonging to “me” or “mine”. Observe the arising and passing away of objects/phenomena as emptiness (śūnyatā).
Impermanence: All conditioned things are fleeting and illusory. None of these can be grasped. Reflect and ask yourself what you are clinging to?
Mindfulness: Practice mindfulness of thoughts and sensation without clinging to judgement and outcomes. Doing something is not to get them done but to experience the act of doing it - like sweeping the floor, washing the dishes and so forth.
Compassion: When we reflect on how everything arise from interconnection, compassion arise because there is no distinction between one’s self and other. Give love without needing to be loved in return – practice compassion without attachment.
Act with clarity without clinging to pride and ego until these becomes the practice of perfection.
