On the nineteenth day of the ninth lunar month (8/11/2025), Than Hsiang Temple held a noon offering session and Pu Men Pin on-site cultivation to celebrate Guan Yin Bodhisattva’s Renunciation Birthday.

Guan Yin Bodhisattva Renunciation Day Celebration “Noon Offering Session”

In the early morning, some lay devotees arrived at Than Hsiang Temple to make offerings to the Buddha. Some offered LED lights, fruits, longevity buns, and other items. Before the start of the noon offering session, Sangha members led everyone in chanting Amitabha Buddha’s name to calm their minds.

At approximately 10 A.M., the noon offering session began, led by the Sangha members. During this session, everyone chanted sincerely and with focus. After the session ended, everyone followed the Sangha members to the San Sheng Dian for the dedication of merits.

Three Refuges and Five Precepts Ceremony

To further celebrate Guan Yin Bodhisattva’s Renunciation Day, Than Hsiang Temple held a Three Refuges and Five Precepts Ceremony on the thirteenth day of the ninth lunar month (2/11/2025). The ceremony was conducted both online via Zoom and onsite at the Great Compassion Hall. Nine people participated in this ceremony, including one online participant—Liao Wei Chen, a student of Than Hsiang Sunday Dharma School and a former primary school teacher.

Liao Wei Chen was diagnosed with stage IV lymphoma. Upon learning that his illness was already at an advanced stage, and due to the ongoing treatment, he could no longer continue teaching at the primary school. On this special day of Guan Yin Bodhisattva’s Renunciation Birthday, Liao Wei Chen took refuge in the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha. Hopefully, through the blessings of the Triple Gem, his condition may improve.

At around 2 P.M., a rehearsal session was held. One emcee and two sisters guided everyone on Buddhist etiquette, including how to hold the Sutra book, bow to the Buddha, and pay respect. After the rehearsal, Sangha members led the chanting of “Incense Offering Praise” and the “Great Compassion Mantra.”

Following this was the Dharma talk session. Venerable Zhen Ru first rejoiced in everyone’s presence at Than Hsiang Temple’s Great Compassion Hall to take refuge in the Triple Gem and Five Precepts. He explained that taking the Three Refuges and Five Precepts opens a bright path and brings protection from devas, Buddhas, and Bodhisattvas, filling one with joy. In his Dharma talk, Venerable Zhen Ru explained the meaning of the Triple Gem and the Five Precepts, as well as the procedures for conveying them.

After the Dharma talk, the Three Refuges and Five Precepts Ceremony began. Everyone sincerely took refuge in the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha, and committed to the Five Precepts. At the end of the ceremony, the Sangha members led the dedication of merits, followed by Venerable Zhen Ru distributing the “Three Refuges and Five Precepts” certificates to the participants.

Pu Men Pin on-site cultivation

On the nineteenth day of the ninth lunar month (8/11/2025), in addition to the noon offering session, Than Hsiang Temple also held the Pu Men Pin on-site cultivation.

At around 8 P.M., before the start of the Pu Men Pin cultivation, the newly appointed abbot, Venerable Zhen Sheng, gave a Dharma talk on the importance of learning the Pu Men Pin. He shared that in today’s world, people often experience worry and depression and may seek the power of compassion. The Guan Yin method offers the support people need. The first method is chanting Guan Yin Bodhisattva’s name—when the Bodhisattva hears the sound of suffering, she responds with compassionate rescue. Secondly, the Guan Yin method does not discriminate between rich or poor, wise or foolish, good or evil—even those on the verge of falling into hell can attain liberation through a single moment of sincere repentance.

Venerable Zhen Sheng also introduced the sutra’s title—“Guan Yin Bodhisattva” and “Pu Men Pin”—and gave a detailed exposition of its core teachings: the principles and manifestations of liberation from suffering. He concluded by encouraging everyone to awaken their inner Guan Yin, reminding us that the ultimate meaning of Pu Men Pin is not to rely forever on an external savior, but to use the compassionate image of Guan Yin to awaken the innate wisdom and compassion within ourselves.

After the Dharma talk, the Pu Men Pin on-site cultivation began. The chanting of Pu Men Pin, circumambulation, and dedication of merits were led by the Brahma Voice Group. Thus, the Pu Men Pin on-site cultivation concluded successfully.
