The Malaysian Buddhist Sangha Association (MBSA) held its 2026 Annual General Meeting on 30 August at the ground floor hall of Than Hsiang Temple in Penang. Following the conclusion of the meeting, a meritorious Sangha Offering Ceremony was held. A total of 19 monks and venerables representing both the Theravada and Mahayana traditions gathered together, embodying the spirit of harmony and unity within the Sangha.

The Sangha Offering Ceremony commenced with an opening by the emcee, Sister Wai Cheng and proceeded in a solemn and orderly manner.

The ceremony began with the Theravada chanting session. Ven. Thanavaro led the congregation in chanting the Buddha's name three times and administered the Three Refuges and Five Precepts. This was followed by the recitation of the Three Refuges and Five Precepts verses. Water was then poured as an act of dedication, transferring the merits to the deceased, all sentient beings, and the merits generated through the Sangha offering.

Following the Theravada chanting session was the Mahayana chanting session. Venerable Miao Hui, representing the Mahayana Sangha, led the congregation in reciting the Offering Verse, making offerings to the Sangha of the ten directions with the utmost sincerity and reverence.

This was followed by the Touch Table offering ceremony. Volunteers came forward one by one to respectfully perform the Touch Table offering and present purified vegetarian food to the venerables. After the venerables had finished their meal, representatives of the lay devotees offered baskets of fresh fruits to the assembled monks and venerables.

In his Dharma talk, Venerable Wei Wu, Vice President of the Malaysian Buddhist Sangha Association, shared that the Sangha Support and Offering Foundation provides educational scholarships to support monastics who wish to pursue further studies at the Malaysian Buddhist College or the International Buddhist College (IBC). In addition to educational assistance, the Foundation also provides medical assistance. Venerable Wei Wu expressed his joy at seeing the strong support from so many volunteers and devotees, and encouraged everyone to continue cultivating the aspiration to support and protect the Sangha.

The ceremony concluded with separate closing rituals and dedication of merits by the Mahayana and Theravada traditions.

This Sangha Offering Ceremony not only provided offerings to the Sangha of the ten directions, but also strengthened the bonds of friendship and fellowship between the Theravada and Mahayana Buddhist traditions. All participants were filled with Dharma joy, and the ceremony concluded successfully in an atmosphere of harmony and gratitude.
