According to Most Venerable Wei Wu’s Dharma talk “One Lives in Jiang Hu, You Can’t Always Do as You Like” in the chapter on pure veganism, he mentioned that the patriarchs of Chinese Buddhism were all endowed with profound wisdom. They actively promoted vegetarianism in China and advocated that Buddhist disciples should adopt a purely vegetarian diet.

Most Venerable Wei Wu further explained from multiple perspectives that pure vegetarianism requires avoiding milk, eggs, and meat. Milk comes from mother cows, and in order to obtain more milk, humans inject them with hormones over long periods of time. Once the cows lose productivity, they are slaughtered and sold as beef in the market. In the egg industry, male chicks are cruelly thrown into grinders, while female hens are confined for life in cramped cages, fed hormone laced feed, and eventually fattened to become fast food fried chicken.

From the perspectives of health, compassion, and karmic consequences in Buddhism, Most Venerable Wei Wu emphasized that milk, eggs, and meat are indeed unsuitable for consumption, and we should commit to eating purely vegetarian.

In response to International Meatless Day, Than Hsiang Temple offered free vegan meal boxes to the public on November 25, 2025. The purpose was to promote and invite everyone to embrace a meatless lifestyle — even if just for a day — to support better health and well being.

On the day before International Meatless Day, the canteen volunteers arrived early at Than Hsiang Temple to help with vegetable cutting and other preparations. In the midst of their busy work, everyone felt joy and Dharma delight.

On International Meatless Day itself, at 8:00 a.m., the vegan meal box packing team volunteers and staff gathered at the Ground Floor Multi purpose Hall. They began in an orderly manner to pack, count, and organize the lunchboxes. Than Hsiang Temple prepared vegan lunchboxes with a combination of delicious dishes such as pumpkin curry and stir-fried vegetables, offering them to the public as a way of forming wholesome connections.

Aside from welcoming everyone to dine in at the Than Hsiang canteen, Than Hsiang Temple also delivered vegan meal boxes to institutions such as Lam Wah Ee Hospital, SJKC Kwang Hwa School, SJKC Min Sin School, and others, thereby encouraging more people to eat vegetarian meals. To further promote vegetarianism, Than Hsiang temple also welcomed pre orders for vegan meal box, allowing people to conveniently pick them up and enjoy them.

It is hoped that on this World Meatless Day, while enjoying vegetarian food and protecting the Earth, everyone may also feel filled with Dharma joy.
