A delegation from the Malawi Amituofo care centre comprising twenty one orphans and eighteen Administrative staffs, led by its founder Ven. Hui Li and Ven. Man Yen, arrived in Than Hsiang for a friendly visit to promote interaction.

In the morning of arrival, the senior citizens and kindergarten students gathered at the 5th floor multipurpose hall to welcome the guests. The delegation first went to the Main shrine hall on the 6th floor to pay homage to the Buddha before proceeding to the multi-purpose to hear the speeches of the Venerables.

In his welcoming speech, Ven. Wei Wu praised Ven. Hui Li for his selfless contribution in helping the African poor by setting up an orphanage home and school. As we all know, the impoverished African state of Malawi is plagued with serious social problems. Adoption of orphans and HIV care are the most pressing matters we are facing now which require substantial financial assistance of donors, he added.

Lastly, Ven. We Wu, welcomed the students to come to the International Buddhist College to continue their study and scholarship and financial aids will be made available to them.
When Ven Hui Li took the stage, he thanked the temple for the warm reception rendered. He would gladly emulate Than Hsiang in its achievement in the field of welfare, education and spiritual cultivation. He further added that he was deeply touched by the four convictions of the temple initiated by Ven. Wei Wu.

Africa is well known as a dark continent where poverty, disasters and epidemic are endemic. Invariably, education will play a decisive role in changing the face of African continent. He also stressed that the orphans in his center are fortunate in being able to be in touch with the Dharma, Chinese culture and opportunity to learn the various languages.

Before winding up his speech, Ven. Hui Li once again thanked Than Hsiang Temple for its support and hospitality. He would gladly accept the offer to send the orphans to IBC for further study. There after the orphans were invited to the stage for their entertainment performance.

The twenty-one orphan delegation aged from 10 to 14 gave a stunning performance in their rendition of some local songs in Malay, mandarin and hokkien, which must have captivated the hearts of the audience judging from the applause they received. There was also a display of Sao Lin Kung fu by the orphaned children.

The kindergarten of THT also reciprocated by presenting two Mandarin songs namely, “Lan hua i tuo tuo” (the enchanting waves) and “Sie Sie Ni” (thank you).

Exchange of gifts between Ven. Wei Wu and Ven Hui Li & Ven. Man Yen were then followed the presentation of presents by the Kindergarten students and the senior folks to the orphans. The delegation had their lunch in the temple before departure.

It is our sincere wish that with concerted effort and dedication of all aspiring sentient beings the light of hope will be set ablaze in Africa- the dark continent.
