To play VCD and DVD in Ubuntu 7.10 is easier than ever. Just install VLC Player.

"VLC is the VideoLAN project's media player. It plays MPEG, MPEG2, MPEG4,
DivX, MOV, WMV, QuickTime, mp3, Ogg/Vorbis files, DVDs, VCDs, and multimedia streams from various network sources..."

Step One: Install VLC Player

From Applications menu choose Add/Remove
Install: VLC

Or use Synaptic Package Manager to search VLC and install it.

Step Two: Open VLC Player, click the play buttom to play and choose DVD or VCD

IMPORTANT: If you cannot play VCD, do this:

You need to choose DVD to play your VCD version 2(now most VCD is version 2).
