Unbuntu 9.10 released today. My system has two partitions with Ubuntu 9.04 installed: one partition for the root / (system file), one partition is home directory /home.
The ideal way to update Ubuntu 9.10 is to reinstall the new system without touching the home directory (partition). What I did:
1. Boot with the Ubuntu install CD,
2. Unmount my old home directory
3. delete all my home folder files and hidden files except Documents, Music, Download and other personal folders.(sudo nautilus)
4. unmount the disk
5. Install Ubuntu 9.10. I use two partitions:
.format one for the root /
.choose my home partition (ext3) without formatting /home/USER
